Seeing Red? Design T.O.'s Gobo Contest

Posted on December 7, 2011

Calling all margin doodlers and notebook sketchers! Want to see your work in lights? Enter by 12/23/11.

The Design T.O.'s Gobo Contest has ended. To see the winner, visit us at www.twitter.com/theatoutfit.

T.O. fans, we want you to design our next gobo! What is a "gobo," you ask? A gobo is a metal or glass template used in lighting instruments to cast patterns of light and shadow onto the set; such as leaves or clouds.

Here in T.O.'s Marketing Department, we use show-specific gobos to project the name of the production onto the building across the street from Theatrical Outfit for all of downtown Atlanta to see. The designs are simple and easy to read, but the result is magical:

In February, we open the 2010 Tony Award Winner for Best Play, John Logan's Red, and we want to see your design chops! All you need is a Sharpie and paper!

The winning gobo design (chosen by the Marketing Department) will be projected leading up to and throughout the six-week run of Red at the Balzer Theater at Herren's (Jan - Mar 2012). The winner will receive two free tickets to opening night. Entries must be received via Twitter or Facebook by 6pm Friday December 23, 2011.

Your designs can be created in a computer program such as Illustrator, or by hand using a Sharpie. Black ink on white paper only; simple designs are best. The word "Red" must be the most prominent, "by John Logan" is optional. Multiple entries are allowed. Scan your designs and submit them to us via Twitter by using our handle @TheatOutfit or uploading them to our Facebook page. We'll be retweeting your designs on Twitter for all to see! Follow us on Twitter to see the other submissions and the announcement of the winner.

TIPS:

The best submissions are easy-to-read, make the best use of space, and "draw" (pun intended) from the show itself. Learn more about Red to prepare for your design.

The fine print:
All rights to the winning gobo design and the gobo itself will belong to Theatrical Outfit after being selected. The gobo design will be projected for the duration of the show, ending March 11, 2012. The winner will receive two free tickets to opening night to see their work of art in action as part of the downtown Atlanta cityscape. Contest ends 12/23/11 at 6pm. Entries must be received via Twitter or Facebook. Theatrical Outfit may choose or design the gobo in-house if submissions are limited or insufficient.
