Bernardine Mitchell*

Bernardine is an Atlanta native who has performed nationally and internationally in a wide range of roles that includes Mahalia Jackson in Mahalia, Bessie Smith in Bessie's Blues, Mrs. Potts in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Velma & Mother Shaw in Crowns, Alice in Big River, the Matron in Chicago and recently in "La Divina Caricatura," written and directed by Lee Breuerat, at La Mama in New York. Bernardine has toured internationally as Antigone in Pulitzer Pride Award-winning Broadway musical The Gospel at Colonus since 1995. Bernardine received the 1993 DramaLogue Award in Los Angeles for Best Actress for her portrayal of Bessie Smith at the San Diego Repertory Theatre. She was awarded the 2002 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Washington D.C. for her performance as Lady from the Road in Blues in the Night at Arena Stage and the 2005 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for Mahalia at MetroStage in Alexandria, VA. She won the Atlanta 2005 Suzi Bass Award for Best Actress for Mahalia at Theatre in the Square in Marietta, GA.
