No matter where we travel in America — at some point in our lives — we arrive at a place where we are reduced to a category, more often than not by the color of our skin. And when that skin color is black, we are challenged by a decision that takes us either forward or back. Conceived and directed by acclaimed director and choreographer Patdro Harris, Travelin’ Black, a celebration of music, words, and dance, carries us on an energizing journey through the soul of the African American experience, illuminating the spirit of a people capable of turning a negative into a positive, into making choices that have — over time — shaped them and the nation. With Harris’ co-writer, the renowned composer and musical director S. Renee Clark helping to navigate our way, Travelin’ Black explores the African American musical landscape from work songs to hip hop to jazz and R&B, and everything in between.
