The Herren’s Story and the Balzer Theater Tour

Founded in 1976, Theatrical Outfit makes its home in the Balzer Theater at Herren’s. This historic site was home to Herren’s Restaurant, which in 1962 was the first restaurant in Atlanta to desegregate voluntarily. Hear this story and tour the first theater in the United States to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Herren’s Restaurant opened in 1934 by prizefighter Charlie ‘Red’ Herren. In 1939, the Guido Negri family bought the restaurant and the business stayed in the Negri family until Herren’s closed in 1987.
